The automotive industry is a big field for expanding aluminum applications
Among the existing approximately 124 industries in the national economy, the automotive industry is one of the most used areas of aluminum. According to data from Chen Yilong, director of the Expert Committee of the Automotive Lightweight Technology Innovation Alliance of the Chinese Society of Automotive Engineers, China’s current automotive gasoline and diesel consumption account for 65% of gasoline and diesel consumption, and 70% of the annual new oil consumption is consumed by new vehicles. According to a survey conducted by the German Heidelberg Company in 2011, a 10% weight reduction for passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, medium trucks, city buses, and long-distance buses can save fuel by 5.7%, 5.7%, 5.7%, 5.6% and 2.4%, respectively. It can be seen that the benefits of lightweight cars will be great, and at the same time, greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced correspondingly, and the social benefits are also huge.
In 2019, China's automobile production and sales were 25.721 million and 25.769 million; the production and sales of new energy vehicles were 1.242 million and 1.206 million. According to statistics from the World Aluminum Association, there are 72.3 million light-duty vehicles in the world in 2019. The maximum amount of aluminum used in North America is 148kg per vehicle, and that in China is only 100kg per vehicle. According to the author's estimation, the amount of aluminum used in North America for light-duty vehicles in 2019 has reached 180kg/unit, and the amount of aluminum used in China is about 120kg/unit. If by 2025, China's light-duty vehicle output can reach 25 million, and the amount of aluminum used can reach 180kg/vehicle, the amount of aluminum can reach 3,600kt. This is an encouraging figure.
I need to point out that the current cast aluminum alloy used in automobiles is basically saturated, and the main increase is aluminum, accounting for more than 85%. There are many parts that need to be aluminized in automobiles, mainly including: covering parts (passenger cars) made of sheet metal, five major pieces of commercial vehicles (front and rear walls, roof, left and right sides), passenger car body, anti-collision beams ( Beams, energy-absorbing boxes, connecting plates), front subframes, dashboard beams, water-cooled casings of new energy vehicles, battery packs, battery pack frames, water-cooled plates, engine front brackets, chassis suspensions, truck cabs, trucks Chassis, all-aluminum light truck cargo box, air tank, etc.
