Application of aluminum matrix composites on C919 aircraft

The application of advanced composite materials in the aerospace industry and its processing level are the embodiment of a country's comprehensive strength and technological level. Aluminum-based composite materials have been widely used in aircraft manufactured by China, and have made due contributions to the improvement of aircraft quality and performance.

Materials are the basis of all manufacturing. Without materials, there is no manufacturing. The C919 large aircraft has completely independent intellectual property rights in China. However, in the six test and test aircraft manufactured by the end of 2018, the raw materials used in the first prototype were almost all imported. In the net quality of the C919 aircraft, the quality of aluminum alloy parts accounted for about 65%. There are three basic requirements for materials used in civil aircraft. Parts manufactured with them should have a long service life, high reliability, and reasonable price. But in general, aerospace aluminum is basically produced in China. Although the quality is still unsatisfactory, it is still higher in price than imported. For example, aluminum is about twice as expensive as the United States and Germany. Aluminum-based composites are about four times more expensive than the United States and Japan, and titanium is about 40% higher than the United States and Japan.

The stability of material performance and the continuous reduction of cost are the focus of the material enterprises, and the control ability of the production process is also the core of whether the aviation material manufacturers can achieve the above two indicators. For aerospace aluminum, even a good material can be produced, however, if process control and performance fluctuation control are not well achieved, then the material cannot be used on civil aircraft.
